Sonargrey
We have tested three black/white fish finders and here are the review:
Garmin 140 - easy to use.
Garmin has to black/white fish finders with screens of 4,0 and 4,7". The last one is in our test and has a very reasonable price. On this finder one can not connect a speed log. Garmin 140 has a twistable attachment, a smart pin lock that are easy to losen and just one contact in the back piece. It is easy to bring home in other words. Garmin 140 is a good fish finder that keep what it promises. Without sticking out from the crowd, the finder gives a solid and good impression. The image is good and the resolution in the screen is sufficient. The menu system is very simple and logically built up as in all Garmin units, and it does not take long before one easily clicks through the whole menu system. The manual is nearly superflouos, and because it is so simple to navigate in the finder, the steps for to change settings is small.
Humminbird 525- big numbers
Humminbird has a big model selection with fish finders sizes of 3- 10". Only in the 500 series with 5" screens there are six different models. We have tested the 525 model which has a high outgoing gain of 200 Watt RMS and the biggest screen compared to the other black/white finders. Humminbirds fish finders are not compatible with other navigation systems. The speed log exist as extra gear. Every Humminbird-finders have a smart attachment with all cabels mounted inside the holder. The instrument is released with a simple button and is easy to bring home after use. The bracket is twistable and can be angled in any directions. Humminbirds black/white 525 model is a good finder for those who want simple functions. A finder that can display the depth with big numbers, something that can be practical for the one that stands on an large stern deck and fishing or has a long distance to the screen as for i.e. a sailboat. Humminbird 525 has besides the best resolution on the screen, and this gives a very detail rich image. When one has learnt to use it, one has a very good finder to a nice price.
Lowrance x52- the best image
Lowrance has several black/white fish finders with image screens from 4 to 5". The tested model x52 has a image area of 4" with a 16 steps greyscale. The frequency is 200 kHz, but one has also a 4# model(x59) that has double frequency of 50 kHz and 200 kHz. Lowrance x52 has a permanent attachment. Speed log is extra. Lowrance x52 has the best picture of those fish finders that took part in the test. The resolution on the screen is relatively high and this contributes strongly to present a very clear and easy-read image. The grey scales harmonates good when the bottom conditions shifts and it is simple to separate between rocky bottom and clay bottom without being an expert of reading fish finders. A very good fish finder.
